Program Description

The primary goal of the Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship Program at Giridhar Eye Institute, Kochi is to provide supervised, clinical training in the examination, diagnosis and medical and surgical treatments of ocular and visual system disorders in neonates, infants and children as well as eye movement disorders and strabismus in adults. The Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship training period is 24 MONTHS. The fellows participate directly in, and have a supervisory role of ophthalmology clinic with ophthalmology residents. The fellows will also participate directly and assume a supervisory role in coverage of hospital and emergency room consults, surgery and outpatient clinical care. The fellows will be required to organize journal club and participate in a clinical or basic science research project during their fellowship with the intent of finishing the project within the fellowship period. The fellowship program also requires the fellow to supervise and instruct students and residents and participate in administrative aspects of medical care. The fellow is also provided an environment in which to learn and participate in both clinical and basic science research. Fellows will rotate with our paediatric ophthalmology faculty at the OPD as well as the comprehensive & community ophthalmology clinics.

  • Diagnosis and management of Refractive Errors
  • Glass prescription in children
  • Diagnosis and management of Amblyopia
  • Diplopia evaluation
  • Diagnosis and management of Squint in children& adults including Eso, exo & vertical deviations.
  • Diagnosis and management of Paediatric Cataracts
  • Diagnosis and management of Binocular Vision Disorders
  • Orthoptics
  • Low vision and rehabilitation
  • Electrophysiology including VEP, ERG
  • Screening of neonates and babies with Retinopathy of Prematurity
  • Diagnosis and management of Neuro-Ophthalmology Disorders
  • Prism Trial & prescription
  • Examination under Anaesthesia
  • Simple & Complex Strabismus surgery
  • Paediatric cataract surgery: Lensectomy +Vitrectomy
  • Lens aspiration with primary posterior capsulorrhexis, Anterior vitrectomy & IOL implantation

Training structure:

First 6 months:

Comprehensive Ophthalmology training including refreshing basics of cataract surgery and refraction:

  • History taking/Vision / retinoscopy
  • Familiarising with common ophthalmic procedures
  • Squint evaluation- sensory /motor
  • Diplopia charting
  • Instruments in OT
  • Observe steps of surgery- squint/cataract
  • SICS

6th to 12th month:

  • OPD Work up
  • Assisting in squint & cataract surgery cases in OT
  • Observe ROP cases
  • Observe oculoplasty cases
  • Electrophysiology
  • Orthoptics
  • Low vision rehabilitation
  • Steps of squint surgery
  • SICS. Paediatric cataract surgery steps under assistance

Last 6 months:

  • Managing patients individually in OPD
  • Independent squint surgeries (camp cases)
  • Independent Peadiatric cataract surgery(camp cases) Class: Case presentation and journal club every week alternately

Camps:

  • School screening
  • Special school screening
  • Cataract screening camps

Academic:

Publication and conference participation

Conference participation in State & in one National & one Speciality (National/International) Conference /Year The fellow should choose one topic of interest for research during his/her tenure and ensure its presentation at state/national/international platform and publication in a peer reviewed journal. Maintain a regular log book of activities till date.
