29 Years of Vision, Dedication & Trust — Beginning the Journey Towards 30
GEI commemorated 29 years of dedicated service in ophthalmic care, while formally launching the celebrations and initiatives leading towards its 30th Anniversary—a milestone reflecting nearly three decades of clinical excellence, innovation, compassion and commitment to the community.
The anniversary programme was inaugurated by Shri V D Satheesan, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Keralam, who highlighted the importance of early detection, prevention and awareness in addressing serious health concerns, including avoidable vision loss. He also emphasised the need for a clear, long-term health policy in the context of the growing burden of lifestyle-related diseases.
The occasion also marked the launch of two significant community-focused initiatives by Giridhar Eye Institute, in association with SSM Eye Research Foundation:
🔹 Project Thejas – Mobile Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Unit
A dedicated mobile initiative bringing diabetic retinopathy screening closer to communities across the district. The unit aims to screen approximately 8,000–10,000 people with diabetes every year, supporting early detection, timely referral and appropriate care.
🔹 Project Kanmani – Mobile Myopia Screening Programme
A comprehensive school eye-screening initiative for students in Government and aided schools across Ernakulam district, focusing on the early identification of vision problems. The programme will also promote eye-health awareness among students, parents and teachers, including safe digital-device use and prevention of avoidable vision problems.
The 30th Anniversary logo was unveiled by Shri Hibi Eden, MP formally setting the stage for a year-long journey of reflection, engagement and renewed commitment to eye health.
In his address, Dr. A Giridhar, Medical Director, highlighted the growing importance of regular eye examinations, particularly amid increasing diabetes and prolonged digital-screen exposure. He reiterated the importance of taking eye care beyond hospital walls and into the community through preventive and awareness-oriented initiatives.
